Johannes "John" Hoffmeier

Generation 2 - Oldest Son

Johannes HOFMEŸER was born Jan 18, 1814 in the canton of Solothurn, Switzerland, the oldest child of Jacob and Anna Maria Hoffmeier to reach adulthood. He married and started his family in Switzerland. After the birth of his last child, John, his wife, and their seven children followed his brother Jacob and emigrated to America. Also traveling with the Hoffmeier family was Benedicta KOCH, who would become the wife of Jacob.

Maria SALADIN, daughter of Josephus Saladin and Maria Burtschi, was baptized 22 Jul 1810 in Nuglar. There is also a record of Maria Anna SALADIN, daughter of Josephus Saladin and Maria Burtschi baptized 12 Apr 1816 in Nuglar. A birth year of 1810 is more consistent with the passenger list and both the 1860 and 1870 census records which all indicate Maria as a few years older than her husband Johannes.

All events in Switzerland were recorded by the Katholische Kirche Sankt Pantaleon-Nuglar (Solothurn). These books have been filmed by the Family History Library of Utah. Herbert lists Johan Hofmeier son of Johan Hofmeier and Maria Saladin - buried 15 Apr 1853, died in April, age 6 months - services performed at St. John the Baptist Church. NOTE - the family did not arrive in New Orleans until April 25, 1853. Perhaps the infant died on the ship, April 15, 1853, still a ways out. They had no choice but to have a burial at sea. Then, as soon as they got to Cincinnati, they went to a church and had services performed.
