Margaritha was born July 21, 1839 in Solothurn Canton, Switzerland and baptized the same day at the Catholic Church in Nuglar, Nuglar-Sankt Pantaleon. She was the second child born to Johannes and Maria, but their first child had died before Margaritha was born, giving her the role of eldest among her siblings. When she arrived in New Orleans with her family in 1853, she was surely a big help to her parents who had 6 other children with them, all under the age of 12.
Although her age is listed as 23 on the ship passenger list in 1853, Margaritha's age is reported as 21 in the 1860 census. She is working, doing housework. Listed with her parents in Franklin County, she also appears in Harrison Township, Hamilton County, Oho, Margaret Hofmyer, 20, born in Switzerland. She is living in the household of Josiah and Harriet Bailey and their three small children. She was doing housework. Josiah was in the tin business. A third relevant census entry in the 1860 census is that of Casper Mack, age 22, born in Germany, working as a cooper. He is living with the Martin Shoemaker family in Brookville township, Franklin County. He may have arrived in New York on the ship Rotunda on 23 Sep 1854. Caspar Mack on the Rotunda's passenger list is an 18 year old cooper from Germany. No other passengers with the Mack surname appear on the same page as Casper.
On Nov 25, 1861, Margaritha married Casper Mack in Franklin County, likely the same Casper Mack found in Brookville township in the 1860 census. By 1870, they had moved to Spencer County, Indiana. Casper was working as a cooper and their family included four children: Philomena 7, Dominick 5, Edward 4, and John 2.
Sadly, Casper died in early 1875. His will was recorded in Spencer Co, Indiana on 2 March 1875.
In May 1877, Margareth Mack married Ludwig Pfeffer in Spencer County. Ludwig may have died, or the marriage did not last, as Margaritha was a widowed head of household in the 1880 census in St. Meinrad, Spencer County. With her are Philomena 17, Dominic 15 working as a laborer, Edward 14, John 12, Margaret 10, Paulus 8 (son), and Jacob 6. Margaretha is 39.
Margaritha was living in the Chicago area around 1890, where some of her children were living. Some of her children moved to California around 1900 and Margaritha moved west also. She died April 25, 1905 in San Francisco.
