Mary HOFFMEIER

Generation 3

Through the Years in St. Joseph's Parish, St. Leon, Indiana 1841-1991, page 55:

SISTER VERENA (Mary Hoffmeier) was born March 2, 1860, at St. Leon, Indiana, to Jacob and Benedicta (Koch) Hoffmeier, both natives of Switzerland. She was baptized Maria Helen at St. Peters, Indiana, on March 5, 1860. She had two sisters, Rosa and Paulina, and a brother, Carl. Their mother died March 2, 1861, at the age of 32 years. April 28, 1863, her father married Margeretha Kern. They were the parents of Jacob, Christina, Maria Magdalena, Anna, Margaret, Carolina and Anthony.

Mary received First Holy Communion April 22, 1877, and was Confirmed Oct. 29, 1878, at St. Joseph Church, St. Leon, Indiana.

She entered the Sisters of Saint Francis, St. Francis Convent, Oldenburg, Indiana, on May 16, 1883, to serve God as Sister Verena, making her final vows on July 26, 1893.

Sr. Verena had come to the Motherhouse from Streator, Illinois, where she had worked successfully with God's blessing. Weak lungs and a throat infection caused her extreme pain. All was accepted with heroic patience as the Will of God. She had been a cheerful and prayerful Religious and so died Oct. 29, 1898, fortified by the Last Sacraments at the age of 38 years, 7 months, and 27 days. Sister Verena's two half-sisters, Anna (Sister Ottilia) and Lena (Sister Carola) entered Sisters of St. Francis and professed in 1900, from St. Martin's, Yorkville, where the family lived then.

Maria HOFMEYER was baptized 5 Mar by Father Leo Osrenkar of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Franklin County, Indiana. Sponsors were John SCHUCK and her mother's sister, Johanna KOCH. Before entering the convent, Mary HOFFMIER, age 20, was living with her older sister Pauline in Cincinnati, Ohio. They were both working as servants, per the 1880 federal census.

Sister Verena is buried in the Sisters of Saint Francis Convent Cemetery, Oldenburg, Franklin County, Indiana.
